OBJECTIVE:  To cover the provisions of 'The Power Press Regulations 1998 and its Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (Part IV of PUWER 98).

The requirement in the 1965 Regulations to train persons who “prepare presses for use” in accordance with a training schedule is retained by Part IV of PUWER 98. In the HSE Guidance attached to Part IV it points out that, because of Regulation 9(2), you are legally required to provide the same degree of training for those that manage or supervise the use of power presses as you provide for those that prepare them for use and inspect and test guards and protection devices.

This course is designed for:

  • Press setters and all others who either set, adjust or try out tools.  Install, adjust, inspect and test tool guards and protection devices.
  • Power Press maintenance personnel.
  • Tool room personnel, supervisors and managers of the above.

COURSE CONTENT:

  • The Power Press Regulations, ACOP and Guidance 1998.
  • The provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.  Content applicable to the safe use of Power Presses, eg Regulation 11 - Dangerous Parts of Machinery.
  • Relevant sections of The Health & Safety at Work Etc Act 1974 and management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1992.
  • BS5304 Guarding Machinery Standard 1998.
  • Power Press Mechanisms.
  • Guards and Protection Devices - types and function, methods of installing, inspecting and testing including detection of defects.
  • Guard design for ease of production and toolsetting.
  • BSEN294
  • Press maintenance with regards to safety and economic and efficient production.
  • Safe methods of work.  Toolsetting for safety and efficient production.  Mechanics of tool clamping.
