Being a HETA Apprentice

Apprenticeships with HETA

HETA provides a service to the Engineering and Process industries located in the Yorkshire and Humber region by offering a full range of apprentice training.  The apprenticeship training takes 3 - 4 years to complete and is recognised not only across the Humber Bank but also nationally. This is achieved through a programme that combines academic and practical work both on production sites and within training workshops.

This involves 26 - 46 weeks training for school, college leavers and other new recruits in the HETA workshops situated in Hull or Grimsby.  The first 26 weeks of training are spent on the NVQ Level 2 – Performing Engineering Operations, followed by a specialisation in the relevant discipline.  The training programme is made up of 3 mandatory units:

•        Working Safely in an Engineering Environment

•        Developing Yourself and Working with Other People on Engineering Activities

•        Using and Communicating Technical Information.

It also includes a mix of units from the following disciplines:

Milling                    Electrical                    PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers)

Turning                  Electronics                  Sheet metalwork

Fitting                    Welding                      CAD (Computer Aided Drawing)

Pneumatics             Plating                        Instrumentation

All training is to Awarding Body standards.

During their time in the HETA workshop, apprentices also complete the five key skills required as part of the Apprenticeship Framework

Communication

Working with Others

Improve Own Learning

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

After the workshop training is completed, apprentices then move back into their own company and commence working towards the appropriate NVQ Level 3. HETA personnel conduct regular visits to review and ensure progress towards agreed targets. This is achieved by providing support, advice, guidance and counselling to apprentices, supervisors, assessors and training managers by regular monitoring visits at intervals of 4 - 6 weeks

Support is provided in relation to:

•        Good Training Practice

•        Selection of Units of Competence

•        Methods of Monitoring Training

•        Gathering of Evidence

•        Assessment

•        Preparation of Portfolio

•        Evaluation of Training

•        Further Education Courses

•        Use of Instruction Manuals

•        Liaison with the Awarding Bodies

•        Administrative Procedures

•        Preparing Trainees for Validation

Apprentices will be monitored throughout their Engineering Apprenticeship until validation by the Awarding Body of an NVQ Level 3 or 4.
