Humber-based HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association) is making preparations to expand its teaching and support staff, as it looks forward to moving into a new £4million premises later this year.
With an established 50-year history of training the engineers of the future, HETA will increase its number of apprentices and adult learners through the 34,000 sq ft development on Dansom Lane in Hull.
Tackling the skills gap
HETA’s new facility comes amid a forthcoming report – EngineeringUK – that will identify an annual demand for at least 124,000 engineers and technicians with the core skills to meet the current demands of the industry.
“We need to invest in providing high quality development and training that will propel our young engineers, and see them succeed in this growing industry,” says HETA’s Chief Executive, Iain Elliott.
“This is one of the key factors in HETA moving to its new site on Dansom Lane. Central to the site’s success will be providing a consistently high standard in our teaching and support as our learner numbers grow.”
Investing in training
To ensure apprentices gain the skills to thrive in their business placements, a high percentage of HETA teaching staff come directly from the industry and are supported through formal teaching qualifications by the training provider.
“We have staff from an array of industry backgrounds,” says HETA’s HR Manager Cathy Bourne. “Developing experienced trades people into the classroom environment brings with it a diverse set of relevant skills that our apprentices really benefit from.”

“I’ve been with HETA almost 18 years,” says Cathy. “In this time, we have enjoyed tremendous growth, but despite this we have managed to retain a genuine family feel. We really care about our employees.”
Testament to the close-knit collaborative environment enjoyed at HETA, is the number of past learners who have relished the opportunity to return in a work capacity. One such example is current Operations Manager, Matt Gardner, who enrolled at HETA as an apprentice when he was 16.
Despite having a fruitful engineering career, Matt has found satisfaction in returning to the classroom: “HETA has given me a great sense of achievement. To know that I can give so many young people the best possible start in their careers, as I had when I was a young person, has been tremendously fulfilling.
“The positive ethos I encountered when I trained at HETA meant that, when I was offered the chance to return, I jumped at the opportunity. I received excellent training to help me succeed as an instructor and that level of development has not stopped. It has allowed me to continually progress my career to a senior level.”
As well as creating new job opportunities in the region, HETA is dedicated to equipping its staff with the skills to succeed and grow their careers at the organisation. It sees this as integral to ensuring continuity for the apprentices that it trains.
“We practice what we preach,” says Cathy. “We are committed to the development of our own people. As well as investing in formal qualifications, we have also recruited a number of employees into roles through an apprenticeship route.
