HETA and the University of Hull are delighted to announce the launch of a new part-time top-up degree in engineering, starting this September. The exciting new provision will allow learners to progress from Level 5 Qualifications or Higher National Diploma (HND) to a full Level 6 degree — all while continuing to live and work in the region.
The programme allows for professionals to progress through two pathways, either an Electrical Level 6 Top Up or a Mechanical Level 6 Top Up part time over a 2-year period.
This joint initiative directly addresses the growing skills gap in the Humber area and beyond, providing vital opportunities for talent to remain local while advancing their qualifications. It marks a significant step in supporting young people and upskilling the existing workforce, with flexible part-time study designed to suit both apprentices and those already in employment.
The University of Hull brings a wealth of academic excellence and outstanding facilities to this partnership. Engineering students will benefit from cutting-edge laboratories, industry-standard equipment, and access to a vibrant, supportive campus environment that promotes both academic and personal development.
Becki Hamnett, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor Educational Partnerships and Skills at the University of Hull, said "We’re thrilled to be working with HETA to offer this new route into higher education. From September, we look forward to welcoming students who are ready to take the next step in their engineering journey — right here in the region."
Iain Elliott, Chief Executive of HETA, added "This is a fantastic opportunity and a game-changer for our learners. It means a young person can now start their journey with us straight from school and progress all the way through to a Level 6 degree without leaving the region. It's a huge win for our learners and for the local engineering sector."
This announcement also reinforces the message that collaboration between training providers is essential to meeting the needs of industry and the employers we collectively serve. By working together, we can build stronger pathways, close the skills gap, and give the next generation the tools they need to succeed.
To support this exciting development, HETA will be hosting a breakfast meeting in July for employers, training providers, and prospective learners to find out more and explore how this opportunity can help shape the future of the regional workforce.
