Last week, HETA had the honour of welcoming Clive Hickman OBE, 139th President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), to its Hull site.
The visit was a proud moment for HETA, bringing together two organisations with rich histories rooted in engineering excellence and industrial development. Learners from HETA led a guided tour of the training centre, showcasing the high-quality facilities and hands-on experience that form the foundation of their apprenticeships.
Following the tour, Mr Hickman addressed the group of apprentices and staff, sharing his own career journey through engineering — from an apprentice to becoming a leader in industry and innovation. His inspirational message highlighted the vast opportunities within the engineering sector and encouraged learners to think boldly about where their careers could take them.
Speaking after the visit, HETA Chief Executive Iain Elliott said:
“It was a privilege to welcome Clive Hickman OBE to our Hull site. HETA and the IMechE both share a heritage of supporting engineers and advancing skills that benefit UK industry. At a time when independent training providers like HETA are facing ever-growing pressures — from funding challenges to increasing regulatory demands — it is more important than ever to have respected institutions like the IMechE championing our work and providing a strong voice to Government.”
The visit served as a reminder of the critical role that high-quality technical training and professional institutions play in shaping the future of UK engineering. With shared values and aligned missions, HETA and the IMechE continue to inspire and support the next generation of engineers.
